Testing and Inspection

The mission of R&D Electronics is to achieve maximum manufacturing quality.

Every component must be considered individually. Based on this guiding principle, highly trained specialists ensure the highest quality through tailor-made test concepts. At R&D, the test procedure is adapted to your product and your requirements.

As components become more compact and feature dense, the number of sources of error increases. This requires an intense level of testing, which can be difficult to achieve with some designs. As a full-service E²MS provider, we can also advise during the component development phase to ensure that your project guarantees optimum quality and durability even before production begins.

In addition to testing our own produced assemblies and equipment, we also offer these services to external companies. The tests can be carried out during development as well as on finished products.

Run-In + Burn-In

Upon request, R&D Electronics will perform thermal stress tests and, similar to vibration and shock tests, will ensure the performance of the product over its lifetime. Products that fail these tests will not be supplied. This helps to minimise errors in the field.

During the Run-In test, we check the module operation while the modules are running at the maximum working temperature, with the base load connected. We make sure that the limits are not exceeded. This is to avoid any premature damage.

We use the Burn-In test (tempering) to check the functionality of the assemblies after they have been exposed to a certain temperature. This stress situation allows us to detect any electronic failures in assembled modules at an early stage. The test parameters (temperature limit, duration) are defined in consultation with your design team. This test ensures a long operating life.

Test automation

Test and inspection systems are an important component in the production of assemblies and devices. Combined with the installation or updating of software or other tasks such as labelling, they offer significant benefits in terms of efficiency and reliability.

R&D Elektronik undertakes the development, design and construction of customised test and inspection systems. We work in partnership with manufacturers of adaptor to co-ordinate complete solutions for your automated software installation, testing and labelling of electronic assemblies. We also offer further development of existing solutions. We can also assist with your test concept and implementation in close consultation with you.

Whether it is a full or a partial scope in the design of test automation, R&D Elektronik is your partner for the entire development and production process.

In-Circuit Test (ICT), Flying Probe Test (FPT), Boundary Scan Test (BST) and Vibration/Shake/Shock Testing

In-Circuit testing uses a test adapter to test all the individual components of an assembly. Fine, spring-mounted needles contact defined points and pins on the assembly via the adapter to electronically test the circuits. This is used to detect faulty traces (short circuits and open circuits) as well as mounting, press-fit and soldering faults.

R&D Elektronik can perform in-circuit testing on request. In order to optimise testing, the design of the module includes appropriate test points. Here too, our specialists will help you to develop the best possible solution at an early stage of your project.

The Flying Probe Test is based on the principle of the in-circuit test. In contrast to ICT, where fixed adapters or needle carrier plates are used, a flying probe tester has a small number of movable test needles (probes) that are generated flexibly from CAD data and follow a precisely programmed path along which they check components and solder joints one after the other. The faults to be detected are analogous to ICT. For the in-circuit test, a test adapter is created that is tailored to your individual assembly, whereas a programme is generated for the FPT.

R&D Elektronik can perform Flying Probe Tests for you on request. FPT has its advantages and disadvantages. Ask our sales department if this method is suitable for your assembly.

Boundary Scan or JTAG refers to the IEEE 1149.1 standard and describes a connection test for digital and analogue components (integrated circuits, ICs) on printed circuit boards. Resistors, crystals, driver devices, logic gates, reset devices, RAM devices, flash devices (both parallel and serial) can be tested for presence.

On request, R&D Elektronik can carry out a Boundary Scan to detect faulty components, soldering faults, assembly faults and solder bath faults in the use of SMT and THT.

Boundary scan can be useful in combination with in-circuit test when ICT reaches its physical limits due to more complex components and smaller distances.

Vibration tests and mechanical shock tests simulate possible stresses during operation or transport. They reveal weak points in the design. Right from the development phase of your assembly or complete device, R&D Elektronik will support.

The mechanical strength of all components is tested in vibration and shock tests using electrodynamic vibration test systems. Vibrations occur at many points in a product’s life and cause fractures in sensitive areas of printed circuit boards or in component connections and connectors.

Shock tests can be part of type approval procedures. They show the effects of mechanical impacts on components. A single shock may not have any visual or functional consequences at first, but it can limit functionality in the medium term. Continuously recurring shocks usually characterise the product’s service life, a parameter whose value must be specified or is useful to know for some applications.

EMC Testing

Is your product suitable for its intended environment? R&D Elektronik helps verify and ensure.

Any manufacturer who places electronic equipment or assemblies on the market confirms, by attaching the CE mark, that the assemblies comply with the applicable requirements and directives of the EU.

The EMC tests that are required for this purpose in accordance with the relevant product or basic standards are an important part of this CE marking.

Ideally, the tests should only confirm the compliance of the finished component. In order to avoid costly and time-consuming redesigns, R&D Elektronik supports with accompanying EMC tests during the development phase, so that weaknesses in the design can be identified and rectified in time.

We offer standard EMC testing for emission and immunity, both conducted and radiated.

Wiring, Functional and Durability Testing

Wiring, Functional and Durability testing: The basis of any validation strategy.

The wiring test contains a connection and short-circuit test of all the plug contacts, which makes it possible to check that the wiring is correct and that resistors, relays, diodes, LEDs, etc. are working properly.

Functional testing ensures the functionality of assembled modules or complete equipment and systems, with no specific testing of individual components. The test simulates actual use and ensures that the manufactured equipment, systems or components operate correctly.

The durability test detects slowly arising failures in the system. It is a long term functional test that detects thermal and dynamic faults as well as functional failures that would otherwise only occur at the end customer.

R&D Elektronik can perform these tests for you. Please contact us.
